How to Wash Silk Scrunchies? 7 Easy Steps to Refresh Them

Silk scrunchies add a beauty of elegance to your style and protect your hair by reducing friction. However, they can not serve their best without proper cleaning and maintenance. The good news is that you can make it with only a little TLC within 5 minutes. Now let us walk through all the steps of washing silk scrunchies.

Things You’ll Need

  • A clean sink
  • A detergent special for silk (or a shampoo with neutral PH)
  • A clean tower
  • A steam

Step by Step Instructions

  • 1.  Prepare the washing container.

Clean the silk to avoid a second contamination. Fill the sink with cold or lukewarm water. The temperature should be under 30℃. Otherwise, the fibers may get damaged or even break down.

  • 2.  Add the detergent.

Add drops of detergent to the water. Stir the water to make it evenly. You can also use a mild shampoo, but make sure it is not alkaline.

  • 3. Submerge the silk scrunchies for about 5 to 10 minutes.

Soak them into the soapy water. You can plunge them up and down to ensure they are all wet.

  • 4. Agitate and rinse.

Gently swirl them. Never rub or twist them toughly. Then rinse them with clean water. Chemical residue is harmful to both your hair and silk fabrics.

  • 5. Remove excess moisture with a towel.

Put them on a towel. Roll and press the towel to absorb excess water.

  • 6. Steam them to loosen the wrinkles up.

Heat the steamer and wait for an even stream. Move and stretch your scrunchies over the steam at a short distance. This process is necessary for that your silk scrunchies are prone to flattening and losing luster after a period of usage. Steaming helps them restore their shape and sheen.

  • 7. Hang dry them on a drying rack.

Do not hang your silk scrunchies under direct sun. Just line dry them in an airy and shady place.

Tips for maintenance

  • Try not to wash your silk scrunchies in a washing machine.
  • Do not dry them in a dryer, including a tumble dryer.
  • Do not wash them too regularly. Once a week is enough to keep your frequently used ones clean. For occasional ones, wash them once a month or less.
  • Do not iron silk scrunchies.
  • Store them in a clean, dry and air drawer.
